Pioneer Consulting and MainOne Announce Completion of New Branch Links on its MainOne Submarine Cable Network Linking West Africa to Europe

Boston, Massachusetts, USA, December 9, 2019 — With the global and industry-leading firm Pioneer Consulting providing engineering and project coordination, MainOne has announced the achievement of Provisional Acceptance for its latest submarine fiber optic cable network which links Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire to the trunk. Following successful and on schedule system line-up testing this past November, customers are already enjoying services on the new connections, enabling MainOne to expand its direct footprint on the submarine fiber optic network to five countries, with an expanding number of terrestrial connections and network across West Africa.

Labelled “Project Odyssey” to the internal working team, Pioneer Consulting’s project management group kept the project on schedule and within budget while at the same time avoiding potential obstacles. Pioneer Consulting’s expert team supervised all wet plant activities throughout project implementation including route and system engineering, product assurance, installation, and ultimately commissioning. Being fully integrated with MainOne’s project leaders, Pioneer Consulting also managed activities that involved the complexities associated with successful commissioning of new links on an existing operational network as well as worked closely with the submarine cable system supplier and marine installer.

Representing MainOne, Regional Executive Mr. Kazeem Olawale Oladepo stated: “It remained our pleasure to work with Pioneer Consulting’s professional project management and engineering team as they integrated into our operational functions to deliver a project that was deployed on time, to budget and in total cohesion with the MainOne team.”

From the onset of the project, the most modern equipment and reliable techniques minimized potential risks and will enhance overall system reliability. With Submarine Line Terminal Equipment, the links employ the latest 100Gbit/s open system technology.

When asked about the completion of the project, Pioneer Consulting’s Project Sponsor and Managing Partner spoke about the company’s affiliation with one another: “Our relationship began in 2008 with the successful deployment of the existing links in MainOne’s international submarine fiber optic cable system, and it was our privilege to be asked to return to help deliver the latest technology on the new upgrades and links. West Africa has never been better served by an open network provider such as MainOne, and the fully implemented upgrades are definitely open for business!”

“Project Odyssey” is an extraordinary model for international and inter-company cooperation in which all parties diligently worked together to achieve a common goal to benefit customers and citizens alike in West Africa.

Pioneer Consulting to Provide Support to Southern Cross NEXT System

Boston, Massachusetts, USA, 1 October 2019Southern Cross Cable Network (SCCN) has entered the construction phase for its planned NEXT submarine cable network, and the leading international telecommunications firm, Pioneer Consulting, will continue to provide support throughout the implementation period.

With the ready for service date (RFS) scheduled on or before Q1 2022, Pioneer Consulting’s expert team will provide a full suite of project management and engineering support related to the construction and delivery for Southern Cross’ NEXT system that will connect Australia, New Zealand and California, USA—including spurs to Fiji, Tokelau, and Kiribati. Southern Cross NEXT will be the largest capacity link providing data-center connectivity between Sydney, Auckland and Los Angeles and the planned 16,148km system will be the lowest latency path from Australia and New Zealand to the USA, as well as provide trunks and diversity for the intermediate locations.

Team leader and Pioneer Consulting’s Managing Partner stated, “Since Pioneer was brought in at the conception of NEXT, our global team will continue to work with Southern Cross to see the vision become a reality. From the planning phases, Pioneer Consulting has produced detailed market analysis as well as consulted on the overall network design. Our firm also assisted with procurement, survey, permitting, and contracting activities—hence we are very familiar with the immense project and we very much look forward to our continued involvement.”

Mr. Laurie Miller, President and CEO of Southern Cross further noted: “The addition of the Southern Cross NEXT route will provide a connectivity to our existing and future customers with increased resiliency, redundancy and capacity between the regions, and we are pleased to once again have Pioneer Consulting on board to assist with our endeavor. Pioneer’s expertise has been instrumental in complimenting the experience in the Southern Cross team in the design and delivery of the Southern Cross NEXT project to date, and we look forward to continuing the teamwork for the successful implementation of this significant project.”

Pioneer Consulting will also support the marine engineering, manufacturing and assembly, factory acceptance, installation, testing and commissioning for both the subsea and terrestrial components of the project through to the system being ready for service.

Southern Cross NEXT cable enters construction phase

Southern Cross NEXT cable announces Contract in Force with Ready for Service of December 2021-January 2022

Sydney, Wellington, London, Boston, 1 October 2019Southern Cross Cable Network (SCCN) and Pioneer Consulting are pleased to announce that the Southern Cross NEXT project has achieved CIF (Contract in Force) and has entered the construction project phase.

“The achievement of CIF is a testament to the hard work of the combined Southern Cross and Pioneer Consulting team over many months and is a validation of the technology and expertise behind the new cable,” said Southern Cross President and CEO, Laurie Miller. “The addition of the Southern Cross NEXT route to our platform will provide existing and future customers with further resiliency and connectivity options between Australia, New Zealand and the United States.”

“From our initial guidance on the network’s overall design and technical specifications, to providing commercial and procurement support, we are delighted to continue to work with Southern Cross on the next phase of this robust network through to system in service,” said Pioneer Consulting Managing Partner, Keith Schofield.

Southern Cross NEXT will be the largest capacity link providing data-centre connectivity between Sydney, Auckland and Los Angeles. Given its robust design and route including branches, the 16,148km cable system will provide the lowest latency path from Australia and New Zealand to the United States. The new route will also provide critical international cable connectivity to the Pacific Islands of Fiji, Tokelau and Kiribati.

“We can now firmly focus on the implementation and deployment of the NEXT system which promises to bring greater resiliency, redundancy and capacity to our extensive network, along with the ongoing development of product enhancements to meet the evolving requirements of our customers,” said Southern Cross CTO, Dean Veverka.

The Southern Cross NEXT system has been designed and developed to be an extension of the existing Southern Cross two-cable ecosystem and will allow customers to leverage Southern Cross’ extensive point-of-presence network and access infrastructure already in place. It will also enable Southern Cross NEXT customers to flexibly assign new and existing capacity across the Pacific’s three routes, maximising diversity and resiliency.

Southern Cross NEXT is the result of a network investment of around US$300 million by Southern Cross, and is designed to carry 72 terabits per second of traffic – roughly the equivalent of simultaneously streaming 4.6 million ultra-high definition movies – ensuring Southern Cross can cater for its customers’ growing data requirements well into the future.

Services offered on the new system will be an extension and integration of the services offered across the current Southern Cross platform. The construction is being funded by a combination of capacity payments, equity contributions and financing.

With significant work already completed including pre-sales, marine survey, landing arrangements, Pacific Island agreements, detail design and the cable RFT, the Southern Cross NEXT project is well positioned to meet its target completion date of end 2021-early 2022.
